The group of students was welcomed in the afternoon at the premises of the Medical University of Vienna. First, there were four presentations by Dr. Nico Joรซl Halwe, Dr. Enikรถ Hermann, Dr. Jiho Lee, and Dr. Alina Tscherne, which covered an introduction to the two research institutes, the importance and effectiveness of handwashing in relation to viral diseases, the structure of viral proteins as well as vector vaccines. This was followed by four interactive stations designed by Dr. Helene Dworak (LBI SOAP).
One station focused on the concept of One Healthโthe coexistence of animals, humans, and the environmentโwith a particular emphasis on explaining zoonoses (the transmission of infectious diseases from animals to humans and vice versa). At the second station, viruses and proteins became tangible through creative hands-on activities. The third station demonstrated how viruses can be visualized in the laboratory using biochemical methods, and the fourth station gave the scholarship recipients the opportunity to gain their first experience with pipetting.
The Ignaz Semmelweis Institute and LBI SOAP would like to thank the scholarship recipients for visiting during their Spring School in Vienna and wish them every success in their future endeavors and in pursuing their goal of studying human medicine!
