The Early Warning System Against the Next Pandemic

About Florian Krammer…

“I am from Styria, grew up in a small village, and was very interested in nature, which somehow led me to virology. I now work in Austria, at the Medical University of Vienna, and head the Ignaz Semmelweis Institute, which I am helping to establish. I also teach at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York.”

When I think about 2040…

“So after the Americans rejoined the WHO, a concept emerged whereby virus monitoring was carried out worldwide in wild animals, but also in farm animals, using sequencing. We have perfected these methods to such an extent that all we need are the sequences we see from these viruses in different animal species, and then we can actually deduce from the sequences whether or not this could be a problematic virus for humans. And if it is, measures are automatically taken to contain the virus while it is still in the animal so that it does not jump to humans at all.”
