A recent outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease in the Linz area has highlighted the importance of specialised expertise in infectious diseases. More than 32 infections and three deaths have been reported in connection with the outbreak.
Legionnaires’ disease is a severe form of pneumonia caused by Legionella bacteria. Infection can occur when contaminated water is aerosolised and subsequently inhaled, making the identification and control of potential environmental sources particularly important.
Univ.-Prof. Helmut Salzer, Professor at the Ignaz Semmelweis Institute and Head of the Clinical Division of Infectious Diseases and Tropical Medicine at Kepler University Hospital Linz, has contributed his expertise to the public discussion surrounding the outbreak. In media interviews, he discussed potential sources of infection, including those that can occur in private water systems, while stressing that the individual risk is considered very low.
The current outbreak illustrates how infectious diseases that receive comparatively little public attention can rapidly become highly relevant. It also underlines the importance of bringing together clinical experience, infectious-disease research and public-health expertise.
At the Ignaz Semmelweis Institute, Helmut leads a clinical research group focused on infectious diseases. The group aims to bridge basic science and clinical research and to support translational research, including studies on disease characteristics, diagnostics and treatment.
